MANITOWOC, WIS. — Lakeside Foods, a family-owned supplier of frozen and canned foods founded by Albert Landreth in 1887, is acquiring frozen foods and vegetable producer Smith Frozen Foods, Weston, Ore. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
“Smith Frozen Foods is well-regarded in the industry for its strong legacy of growing and processing vegetables and its unwavering commitment to product quality and customer service,” said Joe Yanda, president and chief executive officer of Lakeside Foods. “We’re excited to further grow our frozen vegetable business and strengthen service to our nationwide base of retail, foodservice and industrial customers, especially those with a large footprint on the West Coast.”
Smith Frozen Foods, founded in 1919 by Albert Smith, manufactures peas, corn, carrots, lima beans, onions, vegetables, frozen food and also offers processing and packaging services, according to the company.
Lakeside Foods said the transaction also includes purchasing Smith Frozen Foods’ Weston production facility and also the company’s Garret Packing and Brittany Farms operations in Milton-Freewater, Ore., which will continue to produce frozen vegetables after the acquisition.
Gary Crowder, president and chief financial officer of Smith Frozen Foods, will stay on with Lakeside Foods through the transition.
“Lakeside Foods is a family-owned company like ours, with a rich heritage and stable history as a vegetable producer,” said Gordon Smith, owner and chairman of the board at Smith Frozen Foods. “I look forward to watching them further grow and invest in the business my grandfather founded 105 years ago.”
Lakeside Foods, which owns such brands as Blendtopia, Cher-Make, Peak Foods, LLC, Riverside Foods and Serious Bean Co., operates 15 locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio and produces such products as canned and frozen vegetables, frozen appetizers and seafood, canned meats and pet food, canned beans, whipped toppings and sauces for the retail and foodservice channels, according to the company.
In addition to the acquisition, Lakeside Foods is ending operations at its Manitowoc production facility, which best supports the company’s long-term strategic growth plan, Yanda said.
“Our managers have worked to support affected employees by finding them opportunities at other Lakeside Foods locations,” Yanda said. “We remain committed to Manitowoc as our home and corporate headquarters, with four remaining production, warehouse and office locations.”
