PHILADELPHIA — Tyson Foods Inc. will close two plants in Philadelphia, including laying off more than 200 workers.

A new WARN notice filed by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry identified two plants in the northern part of the city with 229 workers expected to be part of the layoff. The notice said the shutdown would be effective Jan. 31, 2025.

Original Philly Holdings, a producer of Philly-style steak sandwiches, was acquired by Tyson Foods back in 2017. The two plants run by Original Philly included a fully cooked and raw facility.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close our two Prepared Foods facilities in Philadelphia to increase the efficiency of our operations,” Tyson Foods said. “We understand the impact the decision has on our team members and the local community. Taking care of our team members is our top priority, and we encourage them to apply for other open roles within the company. We are also working closely with state and local officials to provide additional resources to those who are impacted.”

This latest news comes in the same week that Tyson Foods said the company is closing a beef facility in Emporia, Kan., where around 800 people will be laid off by mid-February 2025.
