Food Entrepreneur HELSINKI, FINLAND — Solar Foods has begun commercializing its protein called Solein in the United States. Solein is the company’s first product and is an all-purpose protein grown with air.

The company said it uses a bioprocess that takes a single microbe and grows the Solein ingredient by fermenting it using air and electricity.

Solar Foods received a self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for the Solein protein in September 2024.

The company now is targeting its Solein protein toward the health and performance nutrition market with its Solein Protein Bites Nut Mix Edition product.

The snack bites are formulated with the company’s Solein ingredient, peanut butter, hazelnuts and are covered in a chocolate flavored coating.

“For this first product concept, we wanted to choose the beloved flavors of hazelnuts and peanut butter to demonstrate how seamlessly Solein fits into existing, popular product categories and flavors already on the market,” said Juan Manuel Benítez-García, chief commercial officer at Solar Foods. “At Solar Foods, we are revolutionizing food. We are not revolutionizing eating. This means consumers can continue enjoying the creamy consistencies and rich indulgent flavors they are accustomed to. When you taste it, you won’t even notice a product is made from a game-changing new ingredient.”

Solar Foods said its Solein protein contains all nine essential amino acids without cholesterol or saturated fats. The ingredient also features iron and vitamin B12.
