AUSTIN, MINN. — Hormel Foods has identified five key pizza trends to look out for in the coming months.
The first trend is spicy pizza toppings. Some examples include garlic-infused chili crisp drizzled over mozzarella and Calabrian peppers.
“More and more establishments these days are adding an extra kick to their pies,” said Logan Kumm, foodservice brand manager at Hormel Foods. “We’re seeing a lot of drive among Gen-Z and millennials who are really liking those spicy flavors.”
The second trend is hot honey toppings.
“It’s the ultimate balance of sweet and heat,” Kumm said. “Hot honey is a trend that’s been around for a while, and we just knew we had to be a part of it, because it’s not going away.”
The third trend is regional pizzas. Some examples include Detroit-style pizza, New York-born Grandma-style pizza and Midwest-born Tavern-style pizza.
“These aren’t just recipes, they’re stories,” said Daniel Moore, foodservice brand manager at Hormel Foods. “Pizza lovers are exploring these regional varieties more than ever before.”
The fourth trend is the pistachio-topped mortadella meat topping, which is partially inspired by Anthony Bourdain’s five-ingredient sandwich, Hormel said.
“As fine dining chefs started picking up on this trend, everyone decided, ‘Hey, mortadella is pretty good. Let’s use it on pizza, too,’” Moore said.
The fifth and final trend is comfort foods. Some examples include corned beef and sauerkraut paired with Swiss cheese and meatballs paired with marinara.
“Nostalgia is really big nowadays,” Moore said. “We see it in pop culture. There’s a yearning for that kind of nostalgia right now, and that’s where these comfort foods are really coming into play, and that certainly includes pizza.”
