WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production in the United States in July 2013 totaled 4,158 million lbs, up 8% from June and up 5% from July 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report.

Pork production was 1,840.9 million lbs, up 10% from June and up 7% from July 2012. Commercial hog slaughter totaled 9.08 million head, up 6% from July 2012. The average live weight of slaughter hogs was 271 lbs, up 2 lbs from the previous year.

June beef production was 2,293.5 million lbs, up 6% from June and up 4% from July 2012. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.89 million head, up 4% from July 2012. The average live weight of cattle at slaughter was 1,302 lbs, up 7 lbs from July 2012.

Veal production was 9.6 million lbs, up 13% from June and up 1% from July 2012. The average live weight of calves at slaughter was 234 lbs, down 7 lbs from the previous year.
