NEW BERLIN, N.Y. – Chobani, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of Greek yogurt products after discovering mold in products distributed nationally from its Twin Falls, Idaho, facility.

The company ceased distribution and pulled product from shelves following reports of product hissing and swelling and several claims of illness.

The recall includes all flavors of 3.5-oz and 6-oz cups, 16-oz and 32-oz tubs, as well as all products from Chobani’s Bite, Flip and Champions lines, with the code 16-012 and “best by” dates of Sept. 11, 2013, to Oct. 7, 2013. The company said Mucor circinelloides, a type of mold commonly found in dairy operations, infected the yogurt.

“I’m sorry we let you down,” said Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of Chobani, in a statement on the company’s web site. “While this type of mold is common in the dairy environment, particularly when using only natural ingredients that are absent of artificial preservatives, it’s still unacceptable to me and all of our yogurt makers.”

He added the company has “worked round the clock” to fix the issue and ship fresh product to stores.

Consumers who have purchased the affected yogurt are advised to discard it and may contact the company’s customer service for replacements or refunds.
