WASHINGTON — Designed to diffuse the controversy and confusion surrounding bioengineered ingredients is a new web site launched by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (G.M.A.). The site, www.FactsAboutGMOs.org, defends the use of bioengineered ingredients by addressing questions regarding their safety, prevalence and benefits.
“Genetically modified food ingredients are not only safe for people and our planet, but they have a number of important benefits,” said Pamela G. Bailey, president and chief executive officer of the G.M.A. “This technology has been used safely in the food supply in the United States for 20 years, and 70% to 80% of the food we eat in the United States, at home and away from home, contains ingredients that have been genetically modified.”
Citing information from governmental food agencies, medical and health organizations and food safety experts, the web site details biotechnology’s benefits, including its role in reducing pesticide use and contributing to an affordable food supply.
“G.M.A. and its member companies will continue to advocate for the continued safe and effective use of agricultural biotechnology to increase the food supply while lowering cost,” Ms. Bailey said. “And we will continue to engage in an informative dialogue with our consumers so that they understand the safety, prevalence and benefits of G.M. technology and so that they can make informed choices for themselves and their families.”
