Talenti makes gelato and sorbetto flavors with gourmet ingredients and artisanal methods.

LONDON — Unilever expands its frozen dessert portfolio with the acquisition of Talenti Gelato & Sorbetto, a Minneapolis-based maker of packaged gelato. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 2003, Talenti uses artisanal methods and gourmet ingredients to make 30 gelato and sorbetto flavors, such as sea salt caramel and Sicilian pistachio. The company is expected to generate more than $120 million in sales this year.

Talenti joins such iconic ice cream brands as Ben & Jerry’s, Breyers, Good Humor, Klondike, Fruttare, Magnum and Popsicle in Unilever’s family of frozen treats.

“Welcoming Talenti to the Unilever family marks another step in our North America portfolio transformation,” said Kees Kruythoff, president of Unilever North America. “The acquisition widens Unilever’s position in the fast-growing gelato market with its artisanal offerings and its clear, distinct and recyclable packaging. We are looking forward to growing and developing this fantastic brand further.”

As part of the transaction, Talenti gains access to Unilever’s extensive distribution network and supplier’s resources to accelerate growth in the premium ice cream category. The company will maintain and operate its production facility in Marietta, Ga., and will continue to offer unique flavors in its recognizable plastic packaging.

“We are thrilled to join the Unilever family, work together to expand distribution and share Talenti love with even more ice cream consumers,” said Steve Gill, chief executive officer of Talenti.
