KENTON, DELAWARE — Roos Foods on March 1 expanded a recall of dairy products linked with a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak. Products include Hispanic cheeses and sour creams that were distributed through retail stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Eight illnesses, including one death, have been reported in California and Maryland. The illnesses were diagnosed between Aug. 1 and Nov. 27, 2013.

The recalled cheese products include Amigo, Anita, Mexicana and Santa Rose de Lima brands of Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacer, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresco Round, and Queso Duro Viejo, Requeson, Queso de Huerta and Quesco Fresco. Affected sour cream products include Santa Rosa de Lima Crema Salvadorena Cultured Sour Cream, Santa Rosa de Lima Mantequilla de Bolsa Tradicion Centroamericana, Crema Pura Mexicana Cultured Sour Cream, La Chapina Crema Guatemalteca Guatemalan Style Cream, and Amigo Brand Crema Centroamericana Cultured Sour Cream.

Samples collected by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene were found to contain the same strain of bacteria connected with the reported illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the investigation to the source of the outbreak is ongoing.
