WASHINGTON — Total commercial red meat production in the United States in September 2012 was 3,948.4 million lbs, down 10% from a month earlier and down 6% from September 2011, the U.S.D.A. said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report.

September beef production was 2,016 million lbs, down 15% from August and down 9% from September 2011. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.54 million head, down 12% from the previous year. The average live weight of cattle at slaughter was 1,311 lbs, up 33 lbs from September 2011.

Pork production was 1,911 million lbs, down 4% from August and down 2% from September 2011, the U.S.D.A. said. Commercial hog slaughter totaled 9.45 million head, down 2% from the previous year. The average live weight of slaughter hogs was 271 lbs, up 1 lb from the previous year.

Veal production was 8.8 million lbs, down 13% from August and down 17% from September 2011. The average live weight of calves at slaughter was 235 lbs, down 17 lbs from the previous year.

January–September 2012 commercial red meat production was 36,553.5 million lbs, up slightly from 36,487.3 million lbs during the same period of the previous year. January–September beef production was 19,341.5 million lbs, down 2% from 2011, while pork production was 17,007.4 million lbs, up 3% from a year earlier.
