Recently Nutraceutical Innovations, Fayetteville, Ark., announced it has perfected a safe, natural process to release the nutritive potential of rice bran. According to the company, rice bran is extraordinarily nutrient dense with multi-health benefits, but in its non-processed state, humans cannot easily digest the bran layer. The company’s new products, NutraBran Solubles and NutraBran Fiber, are being introduced initially as plant-based protein and bulking/fiber ingredients for the food industry.
Both products are suitable for a wide range of products, including baked goods, meats, cereals, smoothies and snacks, among others. NutraBran Solubles has a unique combination of high protein (25% by weight), and water solubility which allows it to be readily incorporated into a wide variety of food products. The solubles are high in protein, potassium, calcium, folic acid and inositol. NutraBran Fiber offers high levels of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Both products have the added benefits of being low fat, hypoallergenic, gluten-free and high in phenolics. They are a source of natural antioxidants in processed foods and beverages, and a healthful bulk filler, for baked goods and some meats, for example. The ingredient can be soluble and is nearly flavorless.
