WASHINGTON — The Consumer Price Index for food and beverages increased 0.2% in October, moving up to 234.7 from 234.2, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor. The food index also rose 0.2% in October.

Four of the six major grocery story groups posted increases of at least 0.4% in the month, led by dairy and related products and meats, poultry, fish, and eggs, both of which advanced 0.8% in October.

The index for fruits and vegetables, which fell 0.4% in September, rose 0.6% in October.

The index for cereals and bakery products followed up a decline of 0.1% in September by increasing 0.4% in October, according to the B.L.S.

For all food at home, the index increased 0.3%, which compared with September when the index was flat in the category.

The only decline during October was in the index for nonalcoholic beverages, which fell 0.3% after increasing 0.9% in September.

The overall Consumer Price Index, which had increased 0.6% in each of the past two months, rose 0.1% in October and has now risen 2.2% over the past 12 months.
