New ‘brown’ flavors from Döhler

Headquartered at Darmstadt, Germany, DöhlerGroup has developed a new range of “brown” flavors, ranging from chocolate, cocoa, nut, nougat and coffee, to caramel and
vanilla. Each flavor is available in a range of nuances.

In addition to extracts and natural flavors, a variety of compositional flavors are available, as well as a portfolio of regionally-focused, county-specific flavor preferences.

The company also has developed a line of beverages with these flavors, ranging from carbonated soft drinks to beer mixes and energy drinks.


Manage rising food costs with functional ingredient systems

Corn crop damage caused by the drought of 2012 likely will affect food prices across all categories in the coming year. As the primary ingredient in livestock feed, corn supply shortages may drive price increases in dairy, eggs, beef, poultry and pork products.

To help offset the rising costs of these ingredients, Somerset, N.J.-based Advanced Food Systems’ (AFS) technical team may recommend or develop functional ingredient systems. The company formulates systems that may reduce or replace costly components, increase product yield, extend shelf life and maximize process efficiencies without sacrificing flavor and texture.

AFS offers: dairy replacers (ReadiCream and Milk Plus); flavor boosters (AFS Cheese Boosters and Butter Flavor Boosters); and binding systems (Actobind, TenderBite and SeasonRite Marinades).

Customized, pre-blended ingredient systems are also available to streamline production processes. Pre-blends combine flavor and function in one system. Using pre-blends may help reduce the number of raw materials that need to be stored and measured in-house, aiding inventory control and minimizing batching errors.


Comax Flavors presents dairy taste without the dairy

Many consumers seek alternatives to dairy due to dietary restrictions or personal choice. With this in mind, Comax Flavors, Melville, N.Y., created a Dairy Taste Enhancer Flavor. It provides a sweet dairy and milky taste in products that contain no dairy.

The product may be used in milk substitutes like soy milk, almond milk, non-dairy creamers and non-dairy cheeses, among others. It is available as a natural liquid flavor and as an artificial flavor. Additionally, it is Kosher, vegetarian and does not contain allergens.


The International Companies reorganize

The International Companies, Fenton, Mo., announced restructuring plans to improve customer service and provide a growth platform for its business and employees.

The company is combining each of its individual business unit support areas (such as customer service, purchasing, etc.) into “centers of excellence” that will support all of the business units.

It also is merging its two food companies, ingredient distributor and adviser International Food Products, and Dairy House, the ingredient blender and product developer for the beverage, dairy and food industries. The new business unit will be called International Food Products.

The International Companies’ other business, International Ingredient Corp., a feed ingredient manufacturer and distributor, will remain as a separate business unit.

“By bringing our best practices together, we will be able to better serve all of our customers and put our people and company on a continued path for growth,” said Clayton Brown, chief executive officer of The International Companies.


New line includes milk protein

Grassland, Greenwood, Wis., now offers Grassland Specialty Custom Ingredients with the function and taste customers expect. The line includes Nutrose brand milk permeate powder, and NutraPro milk protein concentrate and milk protein isolates. Other ingredients include dried and liquid buttermilk, liquid skim condensed, skim milk powder, nonfat dry milk, cheese, cultured dairy ingredients, or custom blends.


DuPont announces hydrocolloid price increase

DuPont Nutrition & Health, Surrey, U.K., recently announced a global price increase of its Grindsted hydrocolloid range from the DuPont Danisco ingredient portfolio, effective Nov. 1, or when contracts are renewed. The price hike is the result of significant increases in raw material, energy and fuel costs.

The range of products includes alginate, carrageenan, cellulose gum, guar gum, locust bean gum, microcrystalline cellulose, pectin and xanthan gum, as well as customized solutions of hydrocolloids, emulsifiers and enzymes to the global food industry.


Rotary airlock valve design reduces material buildup

The Run-Clean series of airlock valves from Caledonia, Ont.-based ACS Valves were designed with multiple features that reduce material buildup inside the valve housing that may occur during operation.

Features include: angled surfaces and rounded edges inside the housing to eliminate dead zones and ensure optimal material flow; factory-applied internal surface coatings, such as tungsten, to prevent surface wear imperfections where material may build up; glandless, sleeve-style shaft seals that prevent contaminant migration into the housing and stainless steel housing to ensure superior strength in the composition and solidification of the housing’s metallurgy.

By reducing the accumulation of material inside the valve during operation, the Run-Clean series may reduce total time for cleaning, validation, and inspection of the valve, and therefore, speed the return to service of the valve.


Stepan Lipid Nutrition ingredients support the pharmaceutical markets

Located in Northfield, Ill., Stepan Lipid Nutrition ingredients support the pharmaceutical markets in the following areas: solubilizer and carrier for active ingredients; excipient as a semi-solid fat source for solid dosage forms; anti-microbial and preservative in liquid pharmaceutical systems; and medical food and clinical nutrition.

NEOBEE Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are used for various pharmaceutical applications, including liquid-based and topical formulations. Their low viscosity and polar properties facilitate handling under low-temperature processing conditions and promote improved dispersibility, spreading and dissolution of actives.

The product is used in medical food and clinical nutrition applications for specific health problems. Some examples include use in medical foods for Alzheimer’s disease treatments and for various metabolic disorders associated with long-chain fatty acid oxidation. MCTs improve the use of dietary fat for energy.

The product range is supported by a DMF and produced according to GMP guidelines.


Linde North America CO2 plants achieve food safety certification

Murray Hill, N.J.-based Linde North America has received FSSC 22000 certification for its 19 beverage-grade carbon dioxide facilities. The certification falls under the Global Food Safety Initiative.

“Consistent gas quality can be critical in the food and beverage industry for controlling microorganisms, extending shelf life and maintaining product quality,” said Sal Calandra, head of quality and food safety for Linde North America. “Linde beverage-grade CO2 plant processes are continuously monitored and controlled within strict quality parameters so beverage customers can be assured of consistent high-purity, food-grade gases.”


Naturex acquires Decas Botanical Synergies

Naturex, Avignon, France, has acquired Carver, Mass.-based Decas Botanical Synergies, a company that specializes in cranberry extracts and powders for nutraceuticals.

The company’s ingredient portfolio includes Proanthocyanidin (PAC) standardized powders and extracts, as well as juice concentrate powders and cold pressed seed oils. Its flagship brand, PACran, is a blend that delivers the entire spectrum of the cranberry. In addition, it may be labeled in the U.S. market “PACran helps support urinary tract health.”

Decas Botanical Synergies’ portfolio and experts will benefit from Naturex’s R.&D. and quality control capabilities. Naturex will manufacture and distribute products throughout Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia.
