WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread increased in October, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 142.2c, up 2.1c per lb from September but down 3.5c from October 2011. The increase followed a decline of 0.6c per lb in September. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in October rose in two regions — up 7.6c in the South and up 2.3c in the West — and fell in two regions — down 2.1c in the Northeast and down 1.7c in the Midwest.
At 201.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 3.2c per lb from September but down 2.7c per lb from October 2011. It was the first time the average price has eclipsed 200c per lb since May.
The national average price of family flour in October was 50.9c per lb, down 1.9c from September and down 3.3c from October 2011.The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was 128.1c per lb, down 3.8c from September but up 0.2c from October 2011. Chocolate chip cookies were 359.5c per lb, up 24.9c from September and up 2.6c from October 2011. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 68.5c per lb, up 0.1c from September but down 8.2c from October 2011.
