Safeway Denver bread plant
Safeway plans to close its Denver bread plant and move bread production to a third-party baker.

DENVER — Pleasanton, Calif.-based grocer Safeway, Inc. said it will close its Denver bread plant on Feb. 27, eliminating 95 jobs. The decision comes as the company continues to streamline operations following its merger with fellow grocer Albertsons in January 2015.

Safeway disclosed its plans for the bakery in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice (WARN) filed Jan. 4. The bakery has operated in northeast Denver since the 1970s.

Kris Staff, a spokeswoman for Safeway, said bread production is moving to an unnamed third-party baker.

“This was a difficult decision made after long and careful deliberation,” Ms. Staff said. “We evaluated the volume of work and believe that moving production to a third party will allow us to run a more efficient operation.”
