SAN FRANCISCO — From flax seed to seaweed, superfood ingredients star in new snack products debuting this week at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. The Specialty Food Association’s annual event, held Jan. 17-19, showcases the latest innovations from 1,500 exhibiting companies. Debuting from Way Better Snacks, a division of Minneapolis-based Live Better Brands, is a nacho-flavored variety of tortilla chips made with sprouted flax seed, chia and quinoa.
Miniature indulgences are another trend in product development. A new product line from Dancing Deer Baking Co. features bite-size cookies with 30 calories each in such varieties as gluten-free double chocolate, chocolate chip sea salt, toffee almond chocolate and brown sugar oatmeal.
“Our master baker has really found the sweet spot of Americans’ taste for dessert, creating cookies and cakes that are big on flavor, but small enough to serve every day,” said Frank Carpenito, president and chief executive officer of Dancing Deer.
