Going grainless

On the heels of the gluten-free phenomenon comes a wave of new grain-free snack and breakfast options. SPINS tracked 124% dollar growth of grain-free products last year, noting more than 200 brands are labeling products as grain-free, grain-less or no grains.

Examples on display at Expo East include Krave the Krunch grainless granola from Paleo Passion Foods, Greenwich, Conn. Made with nuts, seeds, coconut and honey or maple syrup, flavors include Caribbean coconut, chocolate nut, and maple cinnamon.

Grainless cereal and granola

No-Grain-Ola grain-free snacks from Kitchun Grainfree Food Co., Austin, Texas, are made with nuts, seeds and dried fruit in such varieties as honey and maple, apple chai, coconut cacao, and coffee coconut.

Wildway Grain Free Instant Hot Cereal from Wildway, San Antonio, is touted as the first paleo hot cereal on the market, with nuts, seeds and coconut flour. Purely Elizabeth, Boulder, Colo., recently added Grain-Free Granola, a spin on the brand’s original ancient grain granola, in banana nut butter and original flavors and featuring such ingredients as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia and hemp seeds with cashew butter and coconut oil.

Grainless baking mixes

Pamela’s Products, Ukiah, Calif., is introducing a pair of grain-free mixes. Pamela’s Nut Flour Blend contains almond flour, organic coconut flour, pecan flour and walnut flour. Pamela’s Grain-Free Pancake Mix combines nut and coconut flours with 6 grams of protein and 0 grams of sugar per serving.
