GREELEY, COLO. — Alfred Almanza, former deputy undersecretary and administrator with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (F.S.I.S.), has been appointed global head of food safety and quality assurance of JBS SA. Mr. Almanza announced his retirement from his roles at the U.S.D.A. on July 13, where his career began in 1978 working as a meat inspector. He officially retired on July 31.
Mr. Almanza will be part of JBS’ global leadership team and will be responsible for ensuring its operations across the world are implementing high levels of food safety standards and maintaining quality control while managing risks, JBS said. He also will be tasked with maintaining and expanding access to export markets globally.
“I now join a team that shares my commitment to food safety and feeding the world in a safe, sustainable way,” Mr. Almanza said. “I look forward to helping JBS maintain the highest food safety levels in the industry and putting in place best-in-class benchmarks and safeguards to ensure our products continue to exceed all industry standards.”
Mr. Almanza will be based in Greeley, Colo., and will report to Gilberto Tomazoni, global president of operations.
“During his long and storied career at F.S.I.S., Al earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his team-based management approach and his willingness to partner with both industry and public health organizations to ensure the provision of safe, quality food to consumers,” Mr. Tomazoni said.
