Aldi is working with suppliers to source only cage-free eggs by 2025.

BATAVIA, ILL. — Discount grocery retailer Aldi is working with suppliers to source only cage-free eggs by 2025. The company plans to offer a cage-free shell egg option by the end of 2016.

“Aldi will work with suppliers throughout this transition to increase the number of cage-free shell eggs year over year, while also ensuring that eggs are affordable, meet the company’s high-quality standards and are readily available,” the retailer said.

Aldi is the latest food industry stakeholder pledging to transition to cage-free eggs. Chick-fil-A, Kraft Heinz, Albertsons, Schwan Food, Krystal and other retailers and food service operators also have announced plans to source only cage-free eggs.

Aldi operates more than 1,400 stores in 32 states, primarily from Kansas to the East coast. Brands include Specially Selected, liveGfree, SimplyNature, Fit & Active, Bake House Creations, Choceur, Nature’s Nectar, Cattlemen’s Ranch, Friendly Farms, Season’s Choice, Appleton Farms, Sundae Shoppe, Sea Queen, Millville, Tuscan Garden, Baker’s Corner, L’oven Fresh, Chef’s Cupboard, Little Salad Bar and Priano.
