Oat-based beverages

A crop of oat-based smoothies, juices and milks recently has emerged, marketed as fiber-rich, grab-and-go breakfasts for the busy and, in some cases, lactose intolerant. But will consumers warm up to the idea of potable porridge? Click here for the related story.

Alpina oat-based smoothies

Alpina Avena oat-based smoothies are available in original, original light and cinnamon varieties. The original and cinnamon products contain 180 calories and 1 gram of fiber. The light variety has 110 calories and less than a gram of fiber.

Bolthouse Farms Breakfast Smoothies

Bolthouse Farms, a Campbell Soup Co. brand, offers two fruit and yogurt smoothie products blended with whole grain oat flour. In strawberry and peach flavors, Bolthouse Farms Breakfast Smoothies contain 190 calories and 3 grams of fiber per 8-oz serving.

Naked Fruit Juice and Oat Smoothies

Available in limited markets, PepsiCo’s Naked Juice has three juice and oat smoothies.In blueberry, peach mango, and apple raisin varieties, the products contain 320 to 350 calories and 5 to 6 grams of fiber per 9.5-oz serving.

Oatworks oat and fruit smoothies

To bottle the benefits of oatmeal, Oatworks uses a proprietary ingredient developed by Swedish company Biovelop, who patented a process for extracting beta-glucan soluble fiber from oats into a colorless, taste-neutral powder. Oatworks oat and fruit smoothies, in strawberry banana, pomegranate blueberry, and mango peach varieties, promises the heart-healthy effects of oats without the cooking, cleaning and “lumpy bits.” The product is also gluten-free. Each smoothie contains 150 to 160 calories and 2 grams of fiber per 10.8-oz serving.

Simpli OatShakes

Simpli co-founders Helena Lumme and Mika Manninen created their OatShakes line after sampling an oat-based smoothie in Finland nearly five years ago. Available in chocolate, coffee and tropical fruit flavors, OatShakes contain 120 to 160 calories and 1 to 8 grams of fiber per 8.4-oz serving. Simpli also offers a dairy and soy alternative called Naked Oat in original and vanilla flavors and two children’s OatShakes products, OatGrow Chocolate and OatShine Fruits, packaged in lunchbox-ready cartons.

Sneaky Pete's Naturally Oatstanding Beverage

Inspired by his grandfather’s recipe, Pete Stilianessis, founder of Sneaky Pete’s Beverages, L.L.C., debuted a line of oat-based drinks in 2012. With 40 calories and 3 grams of fiber per 12-oz bottle, Sneaky Pete’s Naturally Oatstanding Beverage is available in apple, grape, mango, peach and raspberry flavors.
