In an effort to spark interest in stagnant categories, beverage manufacturers are introducing hybrid drinks that combine flavor and functionality and blur segment lines.
Mtn Dew Kickstart is a mashup of soda, juice and energy drink from PepsiCo, Inc., Purchase, N.Y. Flavors include blueberry pomegranate, blood orange, watermelon, pineapple orange mango, strawberry kiwi, grape, black cherry, limeade, orange citrus and fruit punch.

V8 + Energy from Campbell Soup Co., Camden, N.J., for example, combines a splash of juice and a boost of energy from green tea. Varieties include pomegranate blueberry, black cherry, peach mango, orange pineapple, blackberry cranberry and white grape raspberry.

A recent launch from Harmless Harvest, San Francisco, combines two trendy beverages: coconut water and ready-to-drink coffee. Harmless Harvest Coffee Coconut Water is made with organic coffee beans and U.S.D.A. Organic certified Nam Hom coconut water. The product has about 50 mg of caffeine, according to the company.

San Francisco-based HiBall Energy is introducing a line of energy drinks with 20 grams of protein from grass-fed milk protein concentrate and sodium caseinate. Sweetened with organic, fair trade cane sugar, varieties include coffee, chocolate and vanilla.
