Restaurants serve summer classics with a twist.
Two classic summer treats — cherry pie and strawberry shortcake — are getting a new look at Krispy Kreme. The chain’s new Cherry Pie Donut consists of a classic Krispy Kreme shell filled with cherry filling topped with pie pieces, a dollop of cherry filling and an icing drizzle. The Strawberry Shortcake Donut features a strawberry shortcake filling and is topped with strawberry drizzle, white Kreme topping and pie pieces.

Panera is harnessing a favorite summer fruit in its new salad offering: the Watermelon Feta Salad. Featuring an arugula and mint base, the salad offers cubed watermelon, ancient grains, feta cheese and roasted almonds topped with a champagne Dijon vinegar and extra virgin olive oil dressing.

Starbucks tapped into memories of summer camp and bonfires to offer its take on a classic summer treat. The chain’s new S’mores Bar features a crunchy graham crust and a layer of milk chocolate topped with lightly-toasted marshmallows.

Johnny Rockets is launching its summer menu, featuring a new burger, a new appetizer and two new sweet treats.
The BBQ Brisket Burger features a 100% farm-raised burger topped with cheddar cheese, BBQ beef brisket, lettuce, tomato, and dill pickle chips served on a brioche bun. The BBQ Brisket Loaded Street Tots appetizer consists of a plateful of potato tots topped with shredded cheddar cheese, BBQ beef brisket strips, barbecue sauce, scallions and chopped brisket on top. The Candy Crush Shake is hand-spun and prepared with vanilla ice cream, strawberry syrup and a dollop of whipped cream topped with gummy bears and gummy fish with an extra serving of candy on the side. The Candy Crush Soda Float features Fanta Orange soda and vanilla ice cream topped with gummy bears and gummy fish with an extra serving of candy on the side.
“Summer and barbecuing were the inspiration for our limited time menu,” said Joel Bulger, chief marketing officer for Johnny Rockets. “We've taken two American BBQ classics and put them together in one sandwich — our fresh, hand-crafted burger topped with tender, juicy BBQ beef brisket. And everyone knows about loaded fries, but we’ve taken the loaded potato idea up several notches with our Loaded Street Tots. The new BBQ Brisket Loaded Street Tots appetizer is meant to be shared, but there is no doubt that sharing will not be on the minds of many guests.”

Auntie Anne’s is unveiling its new Bacon Cheddar Stuffed Pretzel Nuggets. The savory bites feature cheddar cheese and slices of bacon wrapped in hand-rolled pretzel dough. The chain also is introducing the Wild Berry Lemonade Mixer, a beverage made with strawberries, raspberries and blackberries.
“We’re thrilled to introduce Bacon Cheddar Stuffed Pretzel Nuggets as a new, portable menu item for the summer,” said Carol Pasquariello, vice-president of marketing for Auntie Anne’s. “Our fans are always on-the-go, and we’re delighted to bring them a convenient, versatile item that can fend off hunger between meals or serve as a meal of its own. Better yet, these nuggets pair perfectly with our new Wild Berry Lemonade Mixer.”

Wendy’s is introducing its new Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad, a 450-calorie salad that provides 40 grams of protein. The dish features lettuce, red onions, grape tomatoes, marinated grilled chicken, crumbled feta and a grain blend comprised of quinoa, chick peas, white beans, fire-roasted vegetables and sundried tomatoes. The salad is topped with a drizzle of hummus and a light balsamic vinaigrette.
“At Wendy’s, our salads are all about fresh, on-trend ingredients that give you a great-tasting experience different from anything you can find in Q.S.R.,” said Kurt Kane, Wendy’s chief concept and marketing officer. “This is a salad experience people are going to love.”

Three new lasagnas are joining Olive Garden’s menu. The Ravioli Alfredo Lasagna features layers of pasta, marinara sauce and Italian cheeses topped with cheese-filled ravioli, Alfredo sauce and toasted parmesan breadcrumbs. The Chicken Parmigiana Lasagna consists of layers of pasta, marinara sauce and Italian cheeses topped with a lightly fried parmesan-breaded chicken breast smothered in marinara sauce and melted cheese. The Seafood Lasagna Saute contains lasagna pasta, spinach, tomatoes, shrimp and scallops sautéed in a seafood Alfredo sauce.

Burger King is combining its popular flame-grilled hot dogs with its iconic Whopper with the new Whopper Dog. Made with 100% beef, the flame-grilled hot dog is topped with lettuce, ketchup, mayo, chopped onions and pickles.

Pizza Hut is pairing stuffed crust pizza with bacon with its new Bacon Stuffed Crust Pizza. The pie features a stuffed crust filled with pieces of Applewood smoked bacon and a blend of mozzarella, white cheddar and provolone cheeses.

Pie Five is dishing up a new dessert: Granny’s Apple Pie. The treat features cobbler spiced apples layered in a snickerdoodle crust all topped with a cinnamon streusel crumble.
“We took an old favorite and gave it a Pie Five twist,” said Patty Scheibmeir, vice-president of R.&D. and product innovation for Pie Five. “With summer just around the corner, Granny’s Apple Pie captures the burst of warm and fresh summer flavors. Plus, nobody ever went wrong by taking a page out of Granny’s cookbook.”

Cicis Pizza is stuffing its pizza buffet with innovation. The pizza chain is introducing two new offerings: Pretzel Stuffed Crust Pizza and Bacon Stuffed Crust Pizza. The pies join Cicis' original stuffed crust pizza.
