Innovations at United Fresh

Consumer demand for fresh and local fruits and vegetables in convenient formats is increasing.

Green Giant Fresh is a line of recipe-ready cleaned and chopped vegetables from Growers Express, Salinas, Calif. The first product in the line — Cauliflower Crumbles — debuted a few years ago. The refrigerated cauliflower product may be mashed, added to pizza crusts, used to thicken sauces and more. This year, three vegetable blends — Asian, Italian and Southwest — and a butternut squash soup blend are being added to the line.

The V8 brand, which is owned by the Campbell Soup Co., Camden, N.J., is adding pineapple passion and red radiance varieties to its line of fruit and vegetable blends, which are described as “bringing the juice bar to a store near you.” Made with 75% juice and 25% water, the beverages come in 12- and 48-oz shelf-stable bottles.

The Little Potato Co., Edmonton, Alberta, is adding a three cheese (cheddar, Parmesan and Romano) variety to its line of pre-washed, microwave-ready creamer potatoes. It joins garlic parsley and savory herb. The potatoes come in a steamer tray with seasoning packet. Earlier this year, the company introduced limited-supply Chilean Splash, a new creamer varietal that features a silky cream-colored skin with splashes of bright purple.

Litehouse Foods, Inc., Sandpoint, Idaho, is growing its Simply Artisan Reserve brand with the introduction of Simple Seasons, a line of real, finely crumbled soft cheese—blue or feta—in a convenient, no-waste, shakable glass jar, which makes it easy for the diner to add cheese crumbles to salads, vegetable side dishes and more. Litehouse also is debuting a freeze-dried guacamole herb blend. The home chef simply blends the seasoning with avocado for homemade guacamole.

The Good Foods Group, Pleasant Prairie, Wis., is expanding its 3.38-oz Grab & Go snack cups line with four varieties — artichoke jalapeño, avocado tomatillo salsa, guacamole and salsa—each with bite-sized tortilla chips. The company also is debuting tomatillo avocado salsa in 12-oz containers. This salsa is made with fresh tomatillos (not cooked or blanched) and perfectly ripened Hass avocados with a little kick of jalapeño.

Mann Packing, Salinas, Calif., is launching a line of single-serve warm meals with fresh vegetables, grains and sauce. Developed by an expert panel of chefs, Mann’s Nourish Bowls feature trending vegetables such as kohlrabi, butternut squash, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, kale and sugar snap peas. The four varieties are: Monterey Risotto, Sesame Sriracha, Smokehouse Brussels and Southwest Chipotle.
