Cheese snacks at IDDBA

New cheese snacks include single portions of cheese, as well as cheese combined with meat, nuts and dried fruit. 

BelGioioso Cheese

Individually wrapped 0.75-oz portions of Parmesan are one of the latest snacking innovations from Green Bay, Wis.-based BelGioioso Cheese Inc. The “Power-Full Snack” is 80 calories per serving and contains 7 grams of protein. Each individual piece is packaged in an easy-open thermoform, with film showing the BelGioioso signature snacking smile logo. The single-serve portions come in packs of eight for $4.99 and 24 (club store) for $14.97. The company is also rolling out provolone cheese and genoa salami snacking rolls. Sold in 1.5-oz single-serve packs containing two rolls, the snack pack delivers 10 grams of protein and 150 calories.

Henning’s Wisconsin Cheese

Family-owned Henning’s Wisconsin Cheese, Kiel, Wis., has been making cheese since 1914. The company is known for its uniquely flavored cheddar cheeses and recently added three varieties. Bacon cheddar contains slowly cured real bacon pieces in yellow cheddar. Dragon’s Breath Cheddar is made with “fire-breathing” peppers. Golden fenugreek cheddar is made with white cheddar cheese and fenugreek seeds, which have a slightly sweet, maple-like flavor that gives the cheese a sweet and nutty flavor. The cheeses come in 12-, 22- and 38-lb wheels, as well as retail 8-oz pre-cuts.

Busseto Foods

Artisanal salumi manufacturer Busseto Foods Inc., Fresno, Calif., is introducing an array of “made in California” meat and cheese packs. The California Snackin’ pack is either meat and cheese, or meat, cheese and nuts. There is also a California Party Pack containing meat, cheese and nuts. The meats are all made in the dry San Joaquin Valley using centuries-old recipes and time-honored techniques to provide authentic aged Italian flavors. The nuts are either almonds or pistachios, both grown in California. The cheeses are made with “Real California Milk,” with packages sporting the seal.

Prime Foods

Boonville, Ind.-based Prime Foods L.L.C., a manufacturer of eggs and egg products, is now in the snack business with the introduction of the Eggs on the Run brand. The Pro-Go! Snack Packs combine a hard-cooked egg with cheese and either trail mix or chocolate-coated almonds. Each pack provides 13 grams of protein. For heartier appetites, there’s Pro-Go Plus High-Protein, which contains 25 to 32 grams of protein from a variety of sources. Three varieties are: hard-cooked peeled egg, Tribe classic hummus, pretzel nuggets, cheddar cheese and trail mix; hard-cooked peeled egg, Tribe roasted red pepper hummus, pretzel nuggets, colby jack cheese and trail mix; and hard-cooked peeled egg, peanut butter, pretzel nuggets, colby cheese and dark chocolate-coated almonds.

Alouette Cheese

Grilled tomato is the most recent flavor to join the 6.5-oz spreadable cheese line from Alouette Cheese, New Holland, Pa. The spreads now include toppings that are showcased through clear packaging to better communicate the bold flavors inside. The company also has new cheese dips for snacking, as they come with identifiable pieces of real vegetables. Varieties are: cucumber ranch, Mediterranean vegetable (eggplant, onion, zucchini and red bell peppers) and onion medley (onions and chives). The dips come in 8-oz cups, with each 2-tablespoon serving containing 50 calories, 3.5 to 4 grams of fat and 2 grams of protein. Labels feature photography illustrating the vegetables.

Saputo Cheese

The Great Midwest brand from Saputo Cheese, Lincolnshire, Ill., is known for its Wisconsin-made, artisan cheeses. The brand now offers Snackin’ Cheese, which are 6- and 12-oz packs that combine part-skim mozzarella string cheese bites with cheddar cheese cubes.

Formaggio Brand Cheese

Formaggio Brand Cheese, Hurleyville, N.Y., is rolling out a party pack of its Artisan Wraps. These are fresh mozzarella cheese rolled up with various authentic Italian salumi. For snacking, the new Charcuterie Snack is a 2-oz pack of prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and a balsamic fig dip. There’s also Cheese Bites, which a 2-oz pack of fresh mozzarella ciliegine and balsamic glaze.

Finlandia Cheese

New Finlandia Snack Time 6.75-oz packs contain nine individually wrapped sticks of cheese imported from either Finland or Estonia. Distributed by Finlandia Cheese Inc., Parsippany, N.J., the packs come in three combinations. They are: Gouda, Gouda and Parmesan, or cheddar and Gruyere.
