Confectionery introductions lean on novel formats, formulations.
The Hershey Co. and General Mills collaborated to create Cinnamon Toast Crunch-flavored Hershey’s Kisses. Inspired by the classic cereal, the candies are formulated with white crème, cinnamon sugar and graham-flavored cookie bits.
Mount Franklin Foods partnered with Swedish confectionery manufacturer Orkla Snacks to launch Bubs brand candies in the United States. The gummies feature a gelatin-free formulation and “foamy” textures, according to the company, and come in flavors like strawberry vanilla, banana toffee and lemon raspberry.
“Bubs checks every box for today’s shopper — it’s fun, it’s tasty, and it’s made with high-quality ingredients,” said Dave Barnett, senior vice president of retail sales at Mount Franklin Foods. “Our retail division is uniquely positioned to scale this brand. From production to shelf, we’re ready to meet demand and grow market share.”
Trolli, a Ferrara brand, expanded its line of Sour Brite Crawlers products with the debut of Trolli Sour Brite Squad. The gummy candies aim to deliver a unique sensory experience with their various shapes and ridged textures, according to the company.
“At Trolli, we don’t just make candy — we reimagine the possibilities of what candy can be,” said Jessica Hunt, senior associate brand manager at Trolli. “We’re pushing the boundaries of what consumers expect from Trolli by creating candy experiences that actively jolt the senses through unique shapes and flavors that are asking to be devoured anytime, anywhere.”
Hormbles Chormbles entered the confectionery category with the debut of its high-protein chocolate bars. Formulated with whey and milk proteins, each bar contains 10 grams of protein, 100 calories and zero sugar. Flavors include cookies and crème, salted fudge, classic milk and peanut butter.
SkinnyDipped, a maker of nut-based snacks, segued into the confectionery aisle with a line of topless peanut butter cups. The cups are formulated with peanut butter and a dark chocolate shell.
Impact Confections launched Atomic Fizz, a multisensory candy. The sour hard candy features a center of sodium bicarbonate mixed with acid to create a “fizzy explosion” when consumed. Atomic Fizz is available blue raspberry, watermelon, black cherry, green apple and lemon flavors.
“Eating Warheads Atomic Fizz takes you on a journey from the extreme sour coating, through the sweet fruity candy, ending with a fizzy explosion in the center,” said Lindsay Karlin, vice president of marketing and development.
Smarties Candy Co. expanded its line of Squashies texture innovations with Mixed Fruit Smarties Squashies. The “fruit-forward” offering contains seasonal summer flavors such as orange, pineapple, lemon, lime, cherry and blackcurrant.
Ferrero North America and Wells Enterprises unveiled a twist on the candy bar format with a line of ice cream-based candy bars. The product merges an ice cream interior inspired by the flavors of Ferrero brand candy bar with a chocolate coating. The ice cream bars come in such varieties as Butterfinger, Baby Ruth and 100 Grand.
Nearly 2,500 companies exhibited at the annual event hosted by the Specialty Food Association.
