KANSAS CITY — Probiotics are popping up in a plethora of new products from spreads to sweets.
This progress in probiotic popularity is fueled by the increase of functional food consumption as consumers’ health and wellness concerns grow, according to a report by Transparency Market Research. The Albany, N.Y.-based market intelligence company reported that the global probiotics market is poised to grow to $96 billion by 2020.
Food and beverage companies are meeting this developing demand with new products packed with the cultures.
Suja Juice Co. is boosting beverages with probiotics by launching a new line of Pressed Probiotic Waters. The enhanced waters are made with organic fruits, vegetables and 2 billion vegan probiotics per 14.5-oz bottle. The drinks are available in raspberry, ginger/lime, pineapple/lemon/cayenne, and orange/ginger/pineapple varieties.
Pairing probiotics with protein, Bob’s Red Mill is offering a new line of plant-based Nutritional Booster Protein Powders. Featuring a blend of pea protein, chia seeds and chicory root fiber, the powders contain 20 grams of protein per serving, probiotics, prebiotic fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. The powders come in vanilla, chocolate, chai and unsweetened protein and fiber varieties.
FlapJacked also is harnessing the probiotic and protein pair with its Mighty Muffins in two new flavors: peanut butter and maple pumpkin. Made with GanedenBC30 vegan probiotics, the muffins feature 20 grams of protein per 230-calorie serving and are certified gluten-free.
Cultures combine with protein again in Goodbelly’s new line of protein shakes.
