Drink mixes tapping into top diet trends

New powdered beverages on the market feature keto or vegan formulations and functional benefits.

Vital Proteins

Collagen-based powders

Chicago-based Vital Proteins is adding Vital Performance, a full spectrum line of high-performance, grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine collagen-based products tailored to meet the functional needs of today’s athlete. Formulated without fillers, binders, synthetic dyes, gluten, dairy or soy, the new line of powders come in a variety of flavors made with natural ingredients for pre- and post-workout support. Each of the Vital Performance products provide athletes with a targeted benefit needed to promote energy, endurance, muscle building and muscle recovery. There’s also a sleep product to assist athletes with getting a restful night so they wake up restored to conquer the next training session. Products are rolling out in December.
Z Natural Foods

Vegan protein

Z Natural Foods, West Palm Beach, Fla., recently introduced Organic Vanilla Cream Vegan Protein. This lightly sweetened vanilla-flavored plant protein powder is keto-friendly. The protein comes from organic pea protein, organic rice protein and organic pumpkin seed proteins. It contains no fillers or synthetic ingredients and mixes well with water and is great in smoothies, milk or juice. To enhance the taste and texture, the powder contains organic coconut milk.

“Coconut milk really is the ideal supporting ingredient as it is packed with phytonutrients, healthy fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals,” said Sam Hirschberg, director of marketing. “Like all our powders, we also dry our coconut at a low temperature to preserve all the naturally occurring enzymes, nutrients and flavor.”

The company also has a new cashew milk powder. Cashew beverage contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc as well as vitamins A, C, D, E and K.

Laird Superfood

Coconut-based creamers

Laird Superfood, Sisters, Ore., offers seven varieties of its keto-friendly dry mix Superfood Creamer. Based on coconut milk powder and coconut oil, the powdered product is described as being travel friendly, allowing keto dieters to give any liquid they are consuming a hefty dose of M.C.T. fats. Most recently, the company added vanilla to its lineup. It is made with Madagascar bourbon vanilla, cinnamon and a touch of organic maple sugar. The Laird Superfood team spent four years developing the final product to ensure it was the most premium vanilla creamer on the market.
ERW

Fighting travel fatigue

Copenhagen-based ERW has developed My Flight Pack, a powdered drink mix system designed to combat the effects of travel fatigue. It was co-developed by Hannah Grant, an acclaimed Danish chef with experience cooking for professional athletes. My Flight Pack comes in three formulations: mango and citrus; cherry, black tea and lemon; and spiced chai varieties. Respectively, the first drink refreshes. The second relaxes. The third is designed to give passengers an energy boost, enabling them to step off the plane mentally alert and ready to perform. The mixes contain super-concentrated, freeze-dried fruit powders and natural adaptogenic herbs. The kit comes with a shaker bottle for easy mixing.
SOS

All about hydration

SOS is a fast-acting electrolyte replacement drink created to prevent and combat mild to moderate dehydration due to active lifestyles and physical performance. The unique formulation was developed by a doctor, two former elite athletes and a retired military medical officer. One sachet stick contains 10 calories and is loaded with a range of minerals balanced for rehydration.
SlimFast

Keto shakes and creamer

SlimFast, a nationally recognized diet brand for more than 40 years, has created the SlimFast Keto line. It includes two meal replacement shake mixes (fudge brownie batter and vanilla cake batter) and an unsweetened coffee whitener.
Minute Mixology

Mixology magic

It’s tough to beat a made-from-scratch margarita or old fashioned, but most consumers don’t have the time or fresh ingredients on hand to mix up an adult cocktail. Minute Mixology offers convenient cocktail mixer single-serve packets. The professionally crafted mixes provide directions on what liquids and garnishes to blend with the powder. The mixes also allow for mocktails.
Vade Nutrition

Whey protein pods

Vade Nutrition, Lansing, Mich., developed patent-pending Vade Nutrition Dissolvable Protein Scoops. These protein “pods” contain whey protein isolate powder wrapped in a food-grade film that dissolves instantly when shaken or blended. They come in chocolate and vanilla flavors, with one pod providing 20 grams of high-quality protein, including 4.4 grams of branched-chain amino acids, which are associated with promoting muscle health. They contain no fat or sugar and are gluten and lactose free. Sucralose, xylitol and sorbitol provide sweetness, while gums assist with mouthfeel. Each pod contains 90 calories and only 1 gram of carbohydrates.
Agropur Cooperative

Fat-burning protein blend

Earlier this year, Agropur Inc., La Crosse, Wis., a wholly owned subsidiary of Agropur Cooperative, introduced BiPro Bold, a mix providing 23 grams of protein per serving. The proprietary cold-filtered protein system is 70% whey protein isolate and 30% milk protein isolate, a blend optimized to deliver both quick- and slow-digesting proteins. Coconut oil powder is a source of medium-chain triglycerides, while added chicory root fiber functions as a prebiotic for digestive health. BiPro Bold comes in chocolate and vanilla flavors, as well as unflavored.
Sneakz Organic

Meal replacement

Sneakz Organic, Jupiter, Fla., has added Meal2Go complete nutrition shakes for adults to its line of pure, whole food blended meal supplement and replacement drinks. Boasting a full serving of daily vegetables, Meal2Go combines 16 grams of plant protein, 17 vitamins and minerals, ancient grains, quinoa, ashwagandha and probiotics. The dry beverage is prepared by mixing with 8 to 10 oz of milk or water to create a smooth, shake-thick consistency. Varieties are: cinnamon chocolate, cinnamon vanilla and roasted coffee blend. Every flavor contains whole carrots, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, beets, spinach and kale.
