Sustainability and transparency are gaining momentum in innovation.
DMK Group, one of Germany’s largest dairy cooperatives, debuted Milram branded plant-based products at SIAL. Rather than trying to replicate ice cream, milk and yogurt, alternative products that are quite abundant in the marketplace, the company is focusing on desserts, such as puddings and porridge, as well as nutritional drinks. The coop plans to introduce pea protein- and coconut oil-based savory spreads in 2023.
Triomphe Snat, a better-for-you food and beverage manufacturer based in France, received a SIAL Innovation Award for Toogood Cotton Candy. The natural sugar-free treat is formulated with chicory fiber. It launched in May 2022.
Frozen convenience foods company Frostkrone Food Group of Germany, introduced Ready to Eat cups. Sold refrigerated, the savory bite-size snacks may be consumed warm or cold. The range includes vegan, vegetarian (with cheese) and chicken options. The inside of Kale Coins, for example, is a blend of kale, sweet potato and carrots. This core is encrusted in a breading of linseeds, sunflower seeds, quinoa and pumpkins seeds. Curry and Mango Tots are a blend of mangoes, apples, carrots, coconut flakes, onions and seasonings covered with coconut flakes, linseeds and coriander. The grilled BBQ Chicken Cubes are chicken breast pieces breaded with a blend of quinoa, millet and linseeds.
Narayan Foods, Slovenia, is preparing to launch plant-based honey in select European countries in January 2023. The bee-free honey was developed in partnership with MeliBio, Oakland, Calif. It is made with clean-label ingredients, and free from seasonal volatility and pesticides. The company said it contains some of the same antioxidants found in bee-made honey and is free from clostridium bacteria, making it safe for new mothers and babies.
Open Sauce Lab, a condiment manufacturer based in South Korea, received a SIAL Innovation Award for Spoonkey Kimchi Block V. Launched in March 2022, this shelf-stable product is freeze-dried kimchi. It provides a convenient solution for home cooks and chefs to always have kimchi available for recipes. Consumers can also travel with it and use as needed for food flavor enhancement.
United Kingdom-based Pott’s now offers its cooking sauces and stocks in easy-open aluminum cans, such as the ones that contain soft drinks. The company claims to be the first to offer the savory systems in such a can. Cooking sauces include everything from enchilada to katsu curry to tikka masala. The stock line includes beef, chicken, fish, lamb, veal and vegetable.
Chazz Chips, Lithuania, has a reputation for pushing the limits when it comes to snack chip innovations. New offerings include potato chips seasoned like a Bloody Mary, Mussels in White Wine and Cannabis (hemp and jalapeno).
Known for its female-focused beauty-from-within beverage creations, Divas Drink International, Slovakia, now offers supplement drinks made with patent-pending vegan collagen. New Care Lab Divas Care Bubbles also contains coenzyme Q10 and anti-aging minerals. Flavors are grapefruit hibiscus and sour cherry rose. The clinically supported vegan collagen features the same combination of amino acids as human collagen type I, according to the company.
