KANSAS CITY — Although the Halloween season has come and gone, consumer packaged goods brands and foodservice operators made sure to mark the spooky season with limited-edition products.

Halloween candy prices have escalated at a rapid pace over the last few years, creating a chilling effect on unit sales for several popular Halloween sweets, according to Catalina’s Shopper Intelligence platform. Average volume for Halloween candy sales decreased by 8%, while overall prices increased by 16%.

However, as the second most popular holiday in the United States, Halloween spending was expected to reach a record high of $12.2 billion, exceeding last year's total of $10.6 billion, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF).

“More Americans than ever will be reaching into their wallets and spending a record amount of money to celebrate Halloween this year,” said Matthew Shay, president and chief executive officer of NRF. “Consumers will be shopping early for festive decor and other related items and retailers are prepared with the inventory to help customers and their families take part in this popular and fun tradition.”
