SAN CLEMENTE, CALIF. — Sambazon, an acai-based food and beverage company, has acquired the acai and smoothie bowl business of SunOpta, Inc. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Sambazon said the acquisition will double its production capabilities and unlock additional innovation offerings within its bowl portfolio with new dry toppings, savory toppings, organic fruit inclusions on top of bowls as well as bases that include tropical fruits, purees and emerging seed bowls.

“This strategic acquisition signifies a major advancement in Sambazon’s ability to distribute nutritious, sustainably sourced superfoods more broadly, building a strong and diversified bowl business to deliver exceptional value and impact in the health food sector,” said Ricardo Perdigao, global chief financial officer and chief operating officer of Sambazon.

Founded in 2000, Sambazon makes ready-to-eat bowls at two processing plants in Brazil, near acai harvesters. With the acquisition of SunOpta’s bowl business Sambazon said it will add US-based manufacturing lines, which will increase its speed to market and supply chain efficiency in the United States.
